It’s official. I’m a home owner!
My husband and I have finally settled in and began to experience what a rent free life looks like. The process was overwhelming at times but we made it. If you’re looking for a house or even thinking about getting out of your apartment, here’s a few things you need to know.
Make a list.
One of my good friends gave me this “Home Buying 101” book to help me prepare for house hunting. I didn’t see the point of narrowing down my must haves because I thought “I’ll just figure it out when I get there.” WRONG! Every house has you see will have at least one thing you LOVE and dozen more you HATE. Once I made a list of what I couldn’t live without, narrowing down my top choice homes was easy.
Find a good realtor.
Let’s face it. Realtors know the house buying and selling process like the back of their hand. They repeat the same details daily. We worked with a couple from church that supported us every step of the way. From figuring out our savings plan prior to looking at houses to closing and receiving the keys. Their help made the entire process smooth and we were done within a few months!
Save. Save. Save.
Owning a home is expensive. Every time I turn around, there’s a light bulb to buy or a table to fill up empty wall space. I no longer have the luxury of just calling the super when something stops working. We prepared a stringent savings plan that allows us to be prepared for all of those “unexpected” costs. If you need some help on putting this together, I highly recommend Financial Peace University.
